I am all for government control of it and treating it just like alcohol. Tax it, collect that money like any other taxable goods.

I don't know... it seems like it makes too much sense for this to happen.  After all we don't like doing simple things in our country.  I obviously agree though.

I'm not going to go into detail about this, but I read a book on legalizing marijuana and the crime laws and all that stuff on it a few weeks ago - quite a good read.

Anyway, I would say it should be legal restrictions. At least that's what I thought until I saw a news report on how Marijuana (allegedly) increases one's chance of a brain/mental condition (tumor?) if you smoke it even once. I'm not sure how reliable the study was, however.

I've never heard of this study or reports of this. If you can find a link I would be greatly interested in reading it.

There's recently been a bit of controversy in the UK about this. The Government down graded cannabis to a class C substance but recent reports are claiming there's a 41% chance of mental illness linked to smoking as little as one joint.

Now I think this latest report is complete bollocks, or the media have misinterpreted it for some reason. But, I have a friend who works in psychiatry and his view is legalising cannabis would greatly increase the number of youngsters with very distressing mental conditions. He's a pretty liberal chap, but since seeing the results of cannabis smoking first hand on a day to day basis his view is it certainly shouldn't be encouraged in any way.

I'm pretty sure I heard about that survey. If it's the same one, the fault comes in the fact that they forgot to ask if the people have used any other drugs.

I don't think legalizing it would increase the number of kids with "distressing mental conditions". I think the problem is that some kids smoke a lot of marijuana because it allows them to escape problems and/or reality. And some turn to it as a permanent solution. And as fun as it may be, I think it's sad when someone turns down reality and instead is baked out of their mind all of the time.

It's true that some mentally ill people self medicate, I also believed it was a case of more mentally ill being attracted to drug use. But if the statistics are showing that the symptoms began after the drug use started it doesn't really seem that way.

My friend tells me that these people start by smoking pot at a young age, then the symptoms appear and that is what tends to cause them to move on to harder drugs such as heroin.

I don't understand--are you saying a "symptom" of smoking weed is the craving to move onto harder drugs?

No, the symptoms of schizophrenia. After they start smoking weed some people develop schizophrenia, then they move on to harder drugs to try and block "the voices" out.

Weed does not cause schizophrenia. Weed rarely produces hallucinogens. You need to smoke a lot. A LOT. But even then it does not bring on schizophrenia.

You're thinking of LSD, which does not cause it, but can bring it out at a younger age in people who already have it or have a genetic predisposition for it.

This is clearly news to you.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/2407027.stm

There is no definite link to schizophrenia, but statistics show a real risk that cannabis use can trigger, if not cause schizophrenia.

Don't ever tell me what I'm thinking, I'm doing my best not to patronise you.

I'm like you MH I do not smoke it never have smoked it and even if legal would not smoke it.

But I think the time has come for it to be legalised, with restrictions like alcohol and cigarettes on legal ages for use. I do not know a lot about the drug or statistics so I wont mention them. But I did read that terminally ill patients have recieved relief from using it and when your watching some one die a very painful death drugged up on that much morphine that they are unable to say a simple word. Had I known where to get some from I would of done it, if it could of at least given him a week, two or even more for a bit more time before the morphin dosages had to be increased to such a level I would of done it.

You are money hungry just like the Government which is no good. Why do you have to tax every single thing that you feel should be taxed?Greed is an ugly thing.

it is not greed - i am talking about taxing it like any other item that is for sale. why should it be treated differently. don't try to make me look like the bad guy. i am all for legalizing it and treating it like any other item for sale at a store, and that means it is taxed. I just suggested using this collected tax money for positive means.

Because the only way it will be legalized is to tax it. What benefit would the government gain by legalizing it and not taxing it?
